Preparing for a career in Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management is the organizational function that deals with people in the business environment.  Common functional areas of HRM are compensation, benefits, hiring, performance, organizational development, safety, training, wellness, employee motivation, communication, administration, employee relations, and labor relations.  This is a vast field and individuals who choose this career path can work in one or all of the above areas depending on the size and organization of the company they work for;  therefore it is important to gain general knowledge in all of these areas.

This field allows for specialization in many areas including compensation, benefits, training and development, labor relations, and safety.  Human resource jobs require, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in human resource management or management.  Those that have a degree in HRM are more likely to be hired than those with a general degree in management.

Salary rates vary in this field according to level of experience, training, location, and company size.
