A-B Seeks Donors to Play a
Part In Renewing College's Musical Tradition
Alderson-Broaddus
College recently unveiled its plans for a major fundraising effort for
the department of music as part of the Renewing the Promise
campaign. Once complete, this effort will increase the amount of
endowed scholarships the College offers to its students and will
provide funding to renovate and expand its current music facilities.
Wilcox Chapel, the
current home of the Alderson-Broaddus music department, has great
meaning for music majors and non-music majors. It is the primary
gathering place for the Alderson-Broaddus community and a sacred space
on campus for music and prayer.
Enrollment
increases, curriculum additions, and the addition of new music
technologies have compelled the College to seek new music practice,
performance, and education spaces in Paul Jones Hall. Situated close
to Wilcox, Paul Jones was constructed in 1961, but has long since
ceased to be a living space for students. While the four-story
building is structurally sound, its interior must be renovated and
partially reconfigured to create office and practice/performance areas
appropriate to music education. Therefore, both Wilcox Chapel and
Paul Jones Hall will undergo a comprehensive renovation, for which the
college will commit $1,370,000, an increase of $870,000 more than
originally designated for this project.
Most of the music
program’s administrative functions will shift from Wilcox to Paul
Jones. Wilcox will become primarily a center for the practice and
performance of music, while the main office and the majority of music
faculty offices will be moved to Paul Jones. A total of 7,090 square
feet will be renovated in Wilcox, and 9,605 square feet in Paul Jones
Hall. Created will be new musical spaces for music students and
faculty. Students will benefit from secure, easily-accessible,
climate-controlled, and centralized storage spaces for the large
number of musical instruments and accessories. Modern, adjustable
lighting and new climate control systems will also be installed in
both buildings.
Every member of
the Alderson-Broaddus community, whether they participate as
vocalists, instrumentalists, or appreciative audience members, will
benefit from an enhanced Wilcox Chapel, made possible by
the campaign.
“Though our college
has many academic programs, people still come for music because of
what we are doing here with our major programs and our touring
ensembles,” said Lillian Long, associate professor of music. “The
chapel is a big part of that. It’s a place that has great meaning for
a lot of people, especially those in the music department. Students
look out the window and contemplate what their life’s work is going to
be. They see their future.”
