Reinke Joins Dining Services as Chef/Food Production Manager

“I’m looking forward to enhancing the dining experience for students and faculty at A-B College,” said Reinke.

Reinke attended the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute and also worked with Sodexo for two years at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. He served six years as a sous chef at the Erie Yacht Club, one of the largest private yacht clubs on the Great Lakes, and has participated in Chef Auction, a fundraiser for the March of Dimes Foundation.

Dr. Dennis Stull Honored as Employee of the Month

A faculty member since 1984, Dr. Stull was nominated by a co-worker who said Stull “works daily with faculty, staff and students and regardless of the situation, is always understanding, patient, kind, and hard working.” The co-worker continued by saying, “Dr. Stull’s sense of humor always makes for an enjoyable work environment.”

The Alderson-Broaddus College Employee of the Month Program was an idea generated by a group of faculty, staff, and students to improve campus morale and recognize individual employees for their special devotion to Alderson-Broaddus College.

Coach Jack Funk Loses Battle with Cancer

One of Alderson-Broaddus College's most loyal alumni and former coach and teacher has lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Coach Jack Funk passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial service celebrating Coach Funk's life will be held on Sunday, May 3 at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Coliseum on the campus of A-B College. Due to limited parking space at the Coliseum, shuttles will run from the main part of campus. 

 John F. "Jack" Funk, 75, of Philippi, went to his eternal home on April 5, 2009.

Jack was born in Jane Lew, a son of the late John and Kate Funk.

Surviving are his wife, Judi; one son, Fred Funk, and wife, Amy, of Bridgeport; two daughters, Linda Long and husband, J.D., of Philippi, and Susan Armstrong and husband, Orton, of Vienna; one brother, Jim Funk of Clarksburg; and one sister, Judy Mossburg and husband, Don, of Knoxville, Tenn. Jack was blessed with 10 grandchildren, Sarah Funk Berry Ann and husband, Nathan; Danielle, Jack and Andrew Funk; Amanda, Chelsea and Shelley Long, Erin and Morgan Armstrong and one great-grandchild, Ava Reese Berry Ann. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Chad Armstrong and sister-in-law, Dorothea Funk. Jack was very close to his family including his nieces and nephews and many cousins

Jack graduated from Jane Lew High School, Alderson-Broaddus College and West Virginia University. He served in the U.S. Army in San Francisco, Calif. He served as recreation director of Wicomico County in Salisbury, Md., for four years. He taught and coached at Alderson-Broaddus College for 32 years. He was a member of the Philippi Baptist Church where he served on many boards over the years. He was a member of the Philippi Kiwanis Club where he has served as president and vice president. Jack was active in many activities in town and was happiest when he was involved with the young people. His presence was always noted at athletic activities at the college and in town.

In lieu of flowers, Jack would be happy for donations to be made to the Coach Jack Funk Battler Room in the Alderson-Broaddus Coliseum, which will offer academic support to athletes, the Jack Funk Scholarship at Alderson-Broaddus College or to Mountain Hospice in Barbour County who made his journey home so much easier.

Chancellor of WVHEPC to Speak at Honors Convocation

/uploads/v9/Ok/v9OkjcKkK9roq-KFTSuOfQ/brian-noland1.jpg Dr. Brian Noland, Chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, will speak at the fifty-sixth annual Honors Convocation at Alderson-Broaddus College on Saturday, April 4, at 10:00 a.m. in Wilcox Chapel on the A-B campus.

Dr. Noland’s message will be the keynote address during the college’s annual celebration of student academic achievement. More than 50 students will be recognized during this special event.

Dr. Noland’s professional career has been primarily focused in higher education and higher education policy.  Prior to joining the Commission’s staff, he served as the Associate Executive Director for the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, and was a faculty member in the Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University.  His scholarly focus has been in the areas of access, accountability, and governance, with articles published in The Journal of College Orientation and Transition, The Journal of Social Indicators Research, and The Handbook of Political Science Literature on Interest Groups.  Dr. Noland was appointed chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission in May 2006.

Dr. Noland received his B.A. and M.A. in Political Science from West Virginia University, and holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Cinderella Ball Author to be Special Guest at Alumni Night

The Alderson-Broaddus College alumni staff will serve as hosts to Barbour County alumni on Saturday, February 21, from 5-8 p.m. in the Battler Room at Rex Pyles Arena on the campus of A-B College. Special guest will be Bob Kuska, author of Cinderella Ball, who will be on hand to sign copies of the book. Cinderella Ball offers an in-depth look at Division II basketball with a special focus on the men’s basketball program at Alderson-Broaddus College.

The evening of food, fun and fellowship will be held during the home basketball game between A-B and Glenville State College. The women’s contest begins at 5:15 p.m. Tipoff for the men’s game is 7:30 p.m.

Members of the Philip Barbour High School Band will also be performing throughout both contests.

Battlers Now Ranked 7th Nationally

Alderson-Broaddus' men's basketball program has achieved the program's highest national ranking as the Battlers climb eight spots to #7 in this week's NABC/Division II Coaches' Top 25.

Greg Zimmerman's club improved to 12-1 with a dramatic 71-69 win at defending WVIAC regular season champion Pitt -Johnstown on Saturday evening.  The Battlers ended the contest on a 13-1 run to remain unbeaten in league play at 6-0.  A-B hosts Seton Hill on Thursday and Ohio Valley on Saturday before a showdown at West Liberty next Monday.

A-B's previous high-water mark in the NCAA Division II poll was 13th in rankings of February 21, 2006.  The Battlers have been nationally ranked at some point in each of the past four seasons.

A-B Men Jump Into National Rankings

The Alderson-Broaddus College men's basketball team jumped into the National Association of Basketball Coaches/Division II Top 25 Tuesday.

The Battlers (10-1) sit at No. 15 after extending their winning streak to eight games this past week with victories over the University of the District of Columbia and West Virginia Conference foe Glenville State.

A-B is led by preseason honorable mention All-American Stan Hall, who collected his second consecutive West Virginia Conference player of the week honor after averaging 25.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds for the Battlers last week.

Battlers Down WVWC 2-1; Win WVIAC Crown

After wrapping up a solid WVIAC campaign that included a big win over nationally-ranked Davis and Elkins College, the Battler soccer team earned a bye in the conference tournament, as well as the opportunity to host a semifinal contest.  Despite things falling into place for Coach Dan Kelly’s team, he and his guys all knew that it would be a tough road to the championship.

Students Filming HOC as Part of Grant Project

Three A-B College students and a communications professor are currently shooting footage for a half-hour video for the Homeownership Center (HOC) in Elkins, WV. The video is part of a $4,900 mini-grant project funded by the Alliance of West Virginia Champion Communities. Computer Science (and Mathematics, Business Administration, Marketing) major, Brain Moats and Communications majors, Kiersten Long and Matasha Orsburn have been shooting footage since late September. Dr. Jim Wilkie, associate professor of Communications, has coordinated with John Elza, director of the HOC, on the project.

The group has filmed HOC participating and sponsored events: the Randolph County Fair, the first ever Ambassador Program at the Old Brick Playhouse in Elkins and the Women’s Health Fair at Davis Memorial Hospital, also in Elkins. The HOC is a non-profit organization that helps families, mostly those in the low to moderate income levels, find affordable housing in North Central West Virginia.

Additional footage will be shot in early November, including a Homebuyer Education class in Elkins on November 15. The group plans to have the video project completed in December.

Rev. Nathan Price '98 to be Homecoming Chapel Speaker

Nathan Price, associate minister of youth and church communications at Bridgeport United Methodist Church, will be the guest chapel speaker during Alderson-Broaddus College's Homecoming Weekend on Sunday, Oct. 12. The 9:30 a.m. service will be held in Wilcox Chapel on the campus of A-B College.

Rev. Price graduated from Ripley High School in 1994.  He continued his education at Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia, and graduated in 1998 with a bachelor of arts degree in speech communications.  

From 1998-2000, he was the executive producer/assignment editor for the 5:30 & 6:00 news at WBOY-TV 12 in Clarksburg, West Virginia.  In 2000, he worked for West Virginia University as a production specialist in the University’s Television Production Unit.  That same year he returned to A-B College, only this time as an employee, serving as director of communications. For seven years, Nathan was the sole publicity professional at the College, responsible for all aspects of internal/external communications, including media relations, marketing/advertising, publications, and website management.

His wife, Tricia, is a 1992 graduate of Bridgeport High School, and a 1997 graduate of Marshall University where she received a bachelor of arts degree in music education with a specialization in violin.  Since 1998, Tricia has been employed by Harrison County Schools as an itinerate strings teacher at Nutter Fort Elementary, Washington Irving Middle School, and Robert C. Byrd High School.  Tricia has played with the Arte String Quartet, the Act II Theatre Company, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and the Marshall University Symphony Orchestra.   

Nathan and Tricia are the parents of two children – Hannah (6) and Brady (4).  Hannah is a first grader at Johnson Elementary School.  Brady attends preschool at Heritage Christian School.  

Mendi Simon Named October Employee of the Month

Simon was nominated by a fellow employee who said, “She brings enthusiasm and professionalism to her work and she’s fun to work with. She’s involved in so many things and does them all well.” Simon, an A-B alum, has worked at A-B College since 2007.

Homecoming Festivities Planned Oct. 10-12

Alderson-Broaddus College officials will welcome alumni as they return to their alma mater for the College’s annual Homecoming celebration set for October 10-12, 2008. The theme “Wild Wild West” is set around a weekend full of activities and events including a golf tournament, queen’s pageant, parade and concerts.

Seaton was nominated by a fellow employee who said, “Coach Seaton is very devoted to his students and his work, spending many hours in and out of the office talking with prospective students about A-B College.”

Seaton has been employed at A-B since 1975.  He resides in Philippi with his wife, Carol.

New Battler Unveiled

A new, more modern Battler mascot was unveiled to faculty and staff at Alderson-Broaddus College on Thursday, August 21 during employee introductions.

Dr. Dennis Stull, Provost/Vice-President for Academic Affairs at A-B, introduced the Battler, who then shook a few hands and waved at the crowd. The Battler also made an appearance at New Student Orientation on Saturday, Aug. 23. The mascot could be seen greeting students and their parents in Burbick Hall as well as other locations on campus. 

The Battler will appear at campus activities and sporting events throughout the academic year. A contest to give the mascot a name will be held early in the Fall semester and unveiled during Homecoming activities October 10-12.

 

Self-Study Team to Prepare for Future HLC Visit

Concert Choir to Perform for Pope Benedict

The Alderson-Broaddus College Concert Choir will have the opportunity of a lifetime when they travel to Italy early next year to sing for a Mass at the Vatican. Director Lauren Lindsey has received word from the Vatican that the 50-member choir will sing in the Vatican Basilica for a Mass under Pope Benedict on January 4, 2009 at 5:30 p.

Nursing Students Engage in Cross-Cultural Nursing Experience

Mooney Named WVIAC Player of the Year; Day named to First Team

A second-place finish in the WVIAC as well as solid individual efforts has resulted in the naming of six Battlers from the Alderson-Broaddus softball team to the WVIAC all-conference squads.

Bockbrader Named WVIAC Pitcher of the Week

Battler Basketball Now Available Through Webcast

Alderson-Broaddus College will once again offer live broadcasts of its 2008-2009 men’s basketball games via a webcast at www.ab.edu/gameday.

Alumni, friends and family can listen to Battler basketball games by going to www.ab.edu/gameday and selecting either broadband or dialup. Once the type of service is selected, the user can listen through their computer’s media player. Those using a Windows XP or higher Microsoft Windows computer will automatically use the Windows Media Player already installed on the computer.  Otherwise, users will have to download and install a media player capable of playing "asx" streams.

For years, local fans of Battler Basketball have been able to listen to the games through the college's student run radio station, WQAB 93.1 FM. "The webcast will give alumni, friends and family members who may not have the opportunity to see the game or pick up the radio signal, a way to listen to the game and follow the team," said Melinda "Mendi" Simon, Director of Communications. "We're excited that those who want to follow Battler Basketball will have another way to do so," continued Simon.

A-B Lands Four on WVIAC All-Conference Squads

Following a second place regular season finish in the WVIAC, the Battler basketball team placed four individuals on the all-conference squads.

Stan Hall, a native of Canton, Ohio, was named to the first team.  Hall, a 6-3 guard, averaged 18.3 points per game, which was ninth in the conference.  The junior also averaged 4.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.  He was the only player in the conference to repeat as a first team honoree.

Joining Hall on the first team was Terrell Eargle.  The 2007 WVIAC Freshman of the Year picked up where he left off his rookie campaign, scoring 12.6 points per game.  The 6-4 guard from Youngstown, Ohio was tenth in the conference in rebounding (7.8), fourth in assists (5.4), and third in steals (2.2).  Eargle was the lone sophomore named to the all-conference first team.

Samario Clancy, a 6-3 senior forward, was named to the honorable mention squad.  He averaged 7.4 points per game and was thirteenth in the conference in rebounding with 7.3 per game.  The Cleveland, Ohio native also converted on 52 percent of his field goals.

Clancy was joined by fellow senior Jimmy Williams on the honorable mention team.  Williams, a 6-4 forward scored at 14.4 clip and was 53 percent from the floor, which was good enough for thirteenth in the conference.  The Chicago native was also sixth in rebounding, averaging 8.6 per game, and first in offensive boards, with 3.5 per outing.

The Manteca, CA, native paced A-B to a four-game divisional sweep of Salem International by batting .583 and posted an on-base percentage of .643. Boylen Retires Following 25 Years of Service

Joan Boylen, lead line server in dining services, recently retired from Alderson-Broaddus College following 25 years of service. Boylen also served as lead salad preparer and exhibition cook in the cafeteria.

“Joan has a spark and energy that I can only hope to have when I reach her age,” said Tony Baisi, director of dining services. “You know that someone has made an impression when alumni visiting for homecoming or games make a special trip to the cafeteria to see if Joan is here to give them a hug.”

Boylen, 73, also served the College in other areas of dining services including cashier, lead caterer and presidential residence caterer.

“Joan’s dedication and loyalty to the College and the A-B family is beyond measure,” continued Baisi. “She will be missed very much by fellow employees, students, faculty and staff. “

Kim Felton Promoted to Chef/Production Manager

Felton has worked for Sodexo, Inc. in dining services at A-B College for six years in which she has served as retail supervisor, baker, safety coordinator and board operations supervisor.

"Kim has been a very key part of day to day operations in the administration of food management systems, ordering and inventory of products and equipment, and weekly fiscal reporting for the board and retail operations,” said Anthony Baisi, general manager of dining services. “The College’s food service operation will continue to be successful with Kim’s advancement into a management role.”

Eric Shor Named Employee of the Month

A co-worker nominated Shor after witnessing him take care of a food server who had fallen and twisted her ankle at a College event.

Skotnicki, Hanne Receive Weekly Awards from WVIAC

Alderson-Broaddus runners sweep the Week 3, WVIAC cross country awards after strong showings at the Carl Broughton Invitational.  Chelsea Hanne is the women's Runner of the Week, while Ryan Skotnicki takes the honor on the men's side.

Hanne, a junior from Alliquippa, PA, helped A-B post a second place team finish at the Carl Broughton Invitational hosted by Marietta College. Her 21:06.05 time was good for seventh place over the 5K course.

Skotnicki, a senior from Morgantown, WV, finished fourth of 91 competitors at the Carl Broughton Invitational.



Athletic Training Program Receives Continuing Accreditation

The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education has recently awarded continuing accreditation to the Athletic Training Education Program at Alderson-Broaddus College. The five-year accreditation follows a comprehensive evaluation of the institution’s Athletic Training education program, including a self-study and on-site visit.

Nursing Professor's Paper Selected for Presentation at National Conference

Valerie Minor, associate professor of nursing, has received notification from the American Public Health Association that her abstract about a cardiovascular risk reduction program for school children designed with colleagues from the WVU School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics has been accepted for oral presentation during the 136th APHA Annual Meeting & Exposition to be held October 25-29 in San Diego, CA.  The program is implemented by senior nursing students at Alderson-Broaddus College.

A-B College Speech Team Wins Regional Event

Hall Named Conference POW for Second Week

/uploads/91/LF/91LFnypfgJiSVOz6O1bUTA/Stan-Hall-web.jpg Alderson-Broaddus College’s Stan Hall earned the West Virginia Conference’s Player of the Week honor for the second consecutive week.  The senior from Canton, Ohio averaged 25.5 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds in A-B’s two blow-out wins over the University of the District of Columbia and the University of Indianapolis in the Jack Funk Classic.  He had 19 points in 23 minutes against UDC on December 13 and followed it up with a 32 point, eight rebound, seven assist, effort in a 104-88 victory the following afternoon.  He shot 58 percent from the field (19 off 33), including four of six from behind the arc.

Speech and Debate Team Captures First at Virginia Tournament

Four Students Receive Top Writing Honors

Four students at Alderson-Broaddus College have received top honors in the annual poetry contest sponsored by the Alderson-Broaddus College literature and writing faculty and the student group A-B Writers.

Tyler Scott, a freshman creative writing major from Petersburg, West Virginia, received first prize for his poem “Tat Tvam Asi.

Coach Allen Named WVIAC Coach of the Year

Allen led Alderson-Broaddus to the program's first winning regular season record since 1999.  The former A-B men's basketball standout inherited the rubble of a 1-24 squad when he took over in Philippi prior the 2006-07 season.  The Battlers recorded back-to-back four-win seasons during the Crab Orchard, WV native's first two seasons, but have improved by ten victories so far this season with a 14-13 overall mark heading into the WVIAC Tournament.  A-B's 11-9 conference record is also the best for the school in over a decade.

Executive Committee Approves Minimal Tuition Increase

In light of the nation's current economic challenges and with a desire to help current and future students, and their families, the Executive Committee of the Alderson-Broaddus College Board of Trustees recently approved a minimal 3% tuition increase for the 2009-2010 academic year. The approved tuition increase is the lowest increase since 2002.

Lisa Boswell Named WVIAC Player of the Week

Sophomore Lisa Boswell has been chosen as the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending March 23.

Boswell, an outfielder from Cedar Grove, WV, smacked three home runs, including a pair of grand slams, as A-B won five of nine during a seven-day stretch. She also racked up 15 RBIs and scored nine runs.

Dr. J. Michael Clyburn to be Inaugurated April 17

The ceremony will be held in Wilcox Chapel on the A-B College campus and will be followed by a reception in the Blue and Gold Room of Heiner Hall.

Dr. Philip E. Cline, chairman of the Alderson-Broaddus College Board of Trustees, will preside over the inauguration and serve as master of ceremonies. Special guests who have been invited to make remarks include the Honorable Mary Poling, state legislator representing the 40th District and member of the A-B College Board of Trustees; Ms. Lisa Sharpe, director of the Barbour County Development Authority; Mrs. Karen Weaver, City Manager of Philippi; the Rev. Dr. David L. Carrico, executive minister of the West Virginia Baptist Convention; Dr. Rita Ray, executive director of the West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities; Mrs. Teresa Wigglesworth, president of the A-B College Alumni Association; Dr. Judson F. Bracey, representing the faculty members of A-B College; Mr. Brian Weingart, representing the staff members of A-B College; and, Mr. Matthew Daddysman, president of the Alderson-Broaddus College Student Government Association.

Bagpiper Keith Haddix from Stonewood, WV, will lead the academic processional into Wilcox Chapel for the ceremony. Musical selections for the event will be performed by Mrs. Lillian F. Long, college organist, the Alderson-Broaddus College Brass Choir, under the direction of Dr. Timothy DeWitt, and the Alderson-Broaddus College Concert Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Lauren Lindsey. The “West Virginians” will also perform “My Home Among the Hills.”

Clyburn, who was selected president in April 2008 after an extensive search, assumed the post July 1, 2008. Prior to becoming the president at Alderson-Broaddus College, Dr. Clyburn served as president of Louisburg College in Louisburg, NC, where he facilitated a $20 million capital campaign with funding for capital projects, annual fund, endowment, and student scholarships.

Dr. Clyburn also serves on various councils and committees including the Barbour County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Barbour County Planning Authority, West Virginia Region VII Planning Council, and the Executive Committee and Leadership Committee of the West Virginia Convention of the American Baptist Church.

Criminal Justice Added to Majors at A-B College

Alderson-Broaddus College is pleased to announce the addition of a new academic program to begin in the fall of 2009. The new Criminal Justice Program at A-B College is designed to prepare students for entry into careers in law enforcement fields.

Alderson-Broaddus College has recently received approval to participate in the Yellow-Ribbon Program through the Veterans Administration for the 2009-2010 academic year.
