Battlers Down WVWC 2-1; Win WVIAC Crown
as reported on the WVIAC websiteWest Virginia Wesleyan got off to flying start, but Alderson-Broaddus would have the last laugh as the Battlers took their first WVIAC Men's Soccer Tournament championship. Doug Jones Named November Employee of the Month
Douglas Jones, systems analyst, has been named the November Employee of the Month at Alderson-Broaddus College.
Jones was nominated by a faculty member in the music department who said, “Doug does an exemplary job keeping all of our computers running, updated, and fixes problems without hesitation, and he always does this with a smile.

Terra Turansky Joins Admissions Staff
Kim Klaus, Director of Admissions, is announcing the addition of Terra Turansky as a new counselor to the Admissions Department staff. Turansky, a Buckhannon, WV, native, will graduate from West Virginia University in December 2008 with a bachelor of arts degree in public relations.

Students Filming HOC as Part of Grant Project
Three A-B College students and a communications professor are currently shooting footage for a half-hour video for the Homeownership Center (HOC) in Elkins, WV. The video is part of a $4,900 mini-grant project funded by the Alliance of West Virginia Champion Communities. Computer Science (and Mathematics, Business Administration, Marketing) major, Brain Moats and Communications majors, Kiersten Long and Matasha Orsburn have been shooting footage since late September. Dr. Jim Wilkie, associate professor of Communications, has coordinated with John Elza, director of the HOC, on the project. The group has filmed HOC participating and sponsored events: the Randolph County Fair, the first ever Ambassador Program at the Old Brick Playhouse in Elkins and the Women’s Health Fair at Davis Memorial Hospital, also in Elkins. The HOC is a non-profit organization that helps families, mostly those in the low to moderate income levels, find affordable housing in North Central West Virginia. Additional footage will be shot in early November, including a Homebuyer Education class in Elkins on November 15. The group plans to have the video project completed in December.

Rev. Nathan Price '98 to be Homecoming Chapel Speaker
The Rev. Nathan Price, associate minister of youth and church communications at Bridgeport United Methodist Church, will be the guest chapel speaker during Alderson-Broaddus College's Homecoming Weekend on Sunday, Oct. 12. The 9:30 a.m. service will be held in Wilcox Chapel on the campus of A-B College.
Rev. Price graduated from Ripley High School in 1994. He continued his education at Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia, and graduated in 1998 with a bachelor of arts degree in speech communications.
From 1998-2000, he was the executive producer/assignment editor for the 5:30 & 6:00 news at WBOY-TV 12 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. In 2000, he worked for West Virginia University as a production specialist in the University’s Television Production Unit. That same year he returned to A-B College, only this time as an employee, serving as director of communications. For seven years, Nathan was the sole publicity professional at the College, responsible for all aspects of internal/external communications, including media relations, marketing/advertising, publications, and website management.
His wife, Tricia, is a 1992 graduate of Bridgeport High School, and a 1997 graduate of Marshall University where she received a bachelor of arts degree in music education with a specialization in violin. Since 1998, Tricia has been employed by Harrison County Schools as an itinerate strings teacher at Nutter Fort Elementary, Washington Irving Middle School, and Robert C. Byrd High School. Tricia has played with the Arte String Quartet, the Act II Theatre Company, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and the Marshall University Symphony Orchestra.
Nathan and Tricia are the parents of two children – Hannah (6) and Brady (4). Hannah is a first grader at Johnson Elementary School. Brady attends preschool at Heritage Christian School.

Mendi Simon Named October Employee of the Month
Melinda “Mendi” Simon, director of communications, has been named the October Employee of the Month at Alderson-Broaddus College.
Simon was nominated by a fellow employee who said, “She brings enthusiasm and professionalism to her work and she’s fun to work with. She’s involved in so many things and does them all well.” Simon, an A-B alum, has worked at A-B College since 2007.
The Alderson-Broaddus College Employee of the Month Program was an idea generated by a group of faculty, staff, and students to improve campus morale and recognize individual employees for their special devotion to Alderson-Broaddus College.

Homecoming Festivities Planned Oct. 10-12
Alderson-Broaddus College officials will welcome alumni as they return to their alma mater for the College’s annual Homecoming celebration set for October 10-12, 2008. The theme “Wild Wild West” is set around a weekend full of activities and events including a golf tournament, queen’s pageant, parade and concerts.

Seaton Named September Employee of the Month
Jim Seaton, head coach of
the men’s and women’s cross country and track teams, has been named the September
Employee of the Month at Alderson-Broaddus
College.
Seaton was nominated by a fellow employee who said, “Coach
Seaton is very devoted to his students and his work, spending many hours in and
out of the office talking with prospective students about A-B
College.”
Seaton has been employed at A-B since 1975. He resides in Philippi
with his wife, Carol.

New Battler Unveiled
A new, more modern Battler mascot was unveiled to faculty and staff at Alderson-Broaddus College on Thursday, August 21 during employee introductions. Dr. Dennis Stull, Provost/Vice-President for Academic Affairs at A-B, introduced the Battler, who then shook a few hands and waved at the crowd. The Battler also made an appearance at New Student Orientation on Saturday, Aug. 23. The mascot could be seen greeting students and their parents in Burbick Hall as well as other locations on campus.
The Battler will appear at campus activities and sporting events throughout the academic year. A contest to give the mascot a name will be held early in the Fall semester and unveiled during Homecoming activities October 10-12.

Self-Study Team to Prepare for Future HLC Visit
A nine-member team of faculty and staff at Alderson-Broaddus College has been appointed to conduct a comprehensive evaluation how the College meets or exceeds standards of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The focus of the self-study team will include student learning, strategic planning, business planning, and the future of Alderson-Broaddus College.

Concert Choir to Perform for Pope Benedict
The Alderson-Broaddus College Concert Choir will have the
opportunity of a lifetime when they travel to Italy
early next year to sing for a Mass at the Vatican.

Nursing Students Engage in Cross-Cultural Nursing Experience
A college nursing course designed to give American students a taste of a foreign culture and to introduce them to their foreign counterparts gave nine Alderson-Broaddus College nursing students the opportunity to spend time in Manila, Philippines, recently. The two-week trip was part of the requirements for an elective nursing course and allowed the students to participate in a cross-cultural nursing experience.

Staff Athletic Trainer Featured in HydroWorx Video
An Alderson-Broaddus College athletic trainer has been featured in an e-mail newsletter and promotional video for HydroWorx, a manufacturer of water therapy and conditioning equipment for the home, sports, healthcare, eldercare and fitness markets.
Sarah Weaver, staff athletic trainer and part-time faculty member at A-B College, agreed to have HydroWorx film her rehabilitation program with an injured student athlete earlier this spring.

Mooney Named WVIAC Player of the Year; Day named to First Team
A second-place finish in the WVIAC as well as solid individual efforts has resulted in the naming of six Battlers from the Alderson-Broaddus softball team to the WVIAC all-conference squads.
A stellar senior campaign by catcher Ashley Mooney not only landed her on the first-team, but it also awarded her WVIAC Player of the Year honors.

Bockbrader Named WVIAC Pitcher of the Week
Senior pitcher Kari Bockbrader led A-B to a 3-2 victory over #7 Grand Valley State week at a tournament in Salem, Virginia. The Temperance, Michigan native walked none and struck out four as the Battlers became the second WVIAC school to knock off a nationally ranked top ten squad in 2008.

Battler Basketball Now Available Through Webcast
Alderson-Broaddus College will once again offer live broadcasts of its 2008-2009 men’s
basketball games via a webcast at www.ab.edu/gameday.
Alumni, friends and family
can listen to Battler basketball games by going to www.ab.edu/gameday and selecting either broadband or dialup. Once the type of
service is selected, the user can listen through their computer’s media
player. Those using a Windows XP or higher Microsoft Windows computer will
automatically use the Windows Media Player already installed on the
computer. Otherwise, users will have to download and install a media
player capable of playing "asx" streams.
For years, local fans of Battler
Basketball have been able to listen to the games through the college's student
run radio station, WQAB 93.1 FM. "The webcast will give alumni, friends
and family members who may not have the opportunity to see the game or pick up
the radio signal, a way to listen to the game and follow the team," said
Melinda "Mendi" Simon, Director of Communications. "We're excited that those who
want to follow Battler Basketball will have another way to do so,"
continued Simon.
A-B Forensics Team Repeats as WVIFA State Champions
The Alderson-Broaddus College forensics team won the WVIFA State Championship for the second
consecutive year. The team was first in
overall team sweepstakes, first in individual events sweepstakes and second in
debate sweepstakes.

Lewis Hall Awarded Tenure
Lewis Hall, assistant
professor of music at Alderson-Broaddus
College, was recently awarded
tenure by the College’s Board of Trustees effective August 1, 2008.
Hall is also chair of the department of music, teaches
applied voice lessons, voice class, and music education methods classes
including secondary choral methods, elementary methods, and music for
