AB WSO Championship 2011

PHILIPPI, W. Va. – A goal in the fourth minute of the match was enough for Alderson Broaddus to record its first-ever women’s soccer WVIAC Championship Sunday afternoon as the Battlers downed Davis & Elkins 1-0.

The Battlers’ Olivia Augustine struck with a goal just 3:09 into the first half. Amber Kling flicked the ball from midfield over the Senators’ defenders. Kling put just enough onto the ball to be past the defense and allow Augustine to run under it. She lofted the shot past keeper Ashley Winkelspecht for a 1-0 lead.

D&E controlled much of the half, pushing forward and playing in AB’s defensive third of the field. However, the Senators were unable to place much on their shots on goal. Kate Laird came up strong in the opening stanza with four saves to keep D&E off the board. In the first half, the Senators posted eight shots to three by the Battlers.

D&E pressed in the second stanza but a couple of deft saves by Laird kept the Senators off the board.

For the match, AB totaled 14 shots to 11 by D&E. The Battlers posted eight shots on frame while the Senators tallied five.

Winkelspecht accounted for seven saves to keep D&E in the match. Laird totaled five in the victory.

The Battlers advance to the NCAA Tournament. The first-round match will be determined Monday evening.
