ABU ASSISTANT PROFESSOR RECEIVES WVU RESEARCH AWARD
Aaron Maxwell Named 2014 Co-Recipient

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Alderson Broaddus University Assistant Professor of Environmental Science, Aaron Maxwell, is this year's co-recipient of the West Virginia University Milton T. & Doris E. Heald Promising Researcher Award for 2014.

Maxwell is currently studying at WVU to earn his PHD in geology and his research is on the mapping of surface mines using satellite imagery. He is interested in satellite-based techniques for mapping and monitoring changing landscapes.

“I am honored to receive this award and recognition for my continuing research,” said Maxwell. “I am proud to be a faculty at Alderson Broaddus University and a graduate student in the geology and geography department at WVU. I am grateful for the support of both ABU and WVU in my research pursuits.”

In a letter to Mr. Maxwell from Joe Donovan, associate chair for the geology department of geology/geography at WVU and member of the Milton T. & Doris E. Heald Promising Researcher Award selection committee, he states that it is an especially great honor to be chosen as the 2014 co-recipient of this award due to this year’s high number of nominees, the most in award’s history.

The award began in 2011 at WVU in the department of geology and geography as a way to acknowledge and encourage research among the students in this field.

“Aaron has demonstrated an exceptional ability in his skills of research and is very deserving as a co-recipient of this award,” said Dr. Joan Propst, Alderson Broaddus University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “He is a favored faculty on our campus and excels in engaging students in GIS research. I am proud to have him as a valued colleague.”

Maxwell will receive the $1000 award after July 1, to be applied to his continuing research.
