PHILIP CLINE DEEDS BROADDUS HOSPITAL TO ALDERSON-BROADDUS COLLEGE
PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Dr. Philip E. Cline has gifted the former Broaddus Hospital, on the Alderson Broaddus University campus, to the College. Dr. Cline purchased the hospital building in May of 2011 with the intention of giving it to the College for academic program development.
“I always felt that the College should have that building and I was able to purchase it and perform some renovations to have it made suitable for the students and faculty,” said Dr. Cline. “I’ve always felt that Alderson Broaddus was a special place and this is one way I can contribute to the ongoing growth of the College.”
The former Broaddus Hospital sits on 3.75 acres on the southern edge of the College’s campus. The 100,000 square foot building was prepared for the College by removing the asbestos, installing a new roof, completely stripping the interior of all contents, and washing and sealing the exterior of the building. The former hospital was last occupied in the mid-1990s.
Dr. Philip Cline has served on the Alderson Broaddus University Board of Trustees since 1992. He additionally served as interim president during 2010 and 2011 while a search for a new president occurred. Dr. Cline’s philanthropy related to AB has included numerous scholarships, donations and now the deeding of the former hospital to the College.
The intention for the usage of the building will be to further the goals of the College in the areas of academic program and student enrollment growth. The College has a goal of doubling the undergraduate enrollment over the next four years.
“This is a tremendous gift,” said AB President Rick Creehan. “Dr. Cline has continually made Alderson Broaddus a better institution since he became involved with the College. We sincerely appreciate his commitment to the College and his incredible generosity."
