Where You'll Live

Residence Life

More than 80% of AB undergraduates live on campus. Each of our six residential communities has its own character — historic, modern, themed, or independent.

Why Live On Campus

The Hilltop Was Built To Be Lived On

Alderson Broaddus is a residential university by design. Our Residence Life staff — six full-time professional staff and 18 trained student Resident Assistants — believe that the residential experience is not an add-on to college but a core part of it. Living down the hall from your classmates is how friendships are made, how late-night ideas turn into senior theses, how 3 AM crises become 4 AM problem-solving sessions, and how you discover that the kid you sat next to in chemistry on day one is the person you want standing next to you at your wedding ten years later.

Every residential community at AB has live-in professional staff and trained student leaders. Every floor has a designated quiet hour and 24/7 study space. Every residence hall is a short walk from the Crim Dining Commons, the Pickett Library, and the Funkhouser Auditorium. And every Battler is welcome to make their room as much like home as they need.

How It Works

The Residence Life Process

Most first-year students are assigned to Priestley Hall by default; preferences (quiet floor, substance-free floor, themed living) can be indicated on the housing form due July 1. The Residence Life team uses a roommate-matching survey developed in partnership with the Wellness Center to pair compatible students.

Returning students participate in the spring housing-selection lottery. Lottery numbers are drawn by class standing (seniors first, then juniors, sophomores). Students with documented accessibility needs have priority placement throughout the year.

Each room comes with a twin XL bed, a desk and chair, a dresser, and a closet. Students bring linens, decorations, lamps, and personal items. The Residence Life team publishes a recommended packing list each summer; the Battler Bookstore stocks bedding bundles and dorm essentials.

If you have questions about housing — preferences, accessibility, mental-health concerns, roommate conflicts, or anything else — the Residence Life office in Withers 102 is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5 PM. Email [email protected] or call (304) 457-6321.
